From the bohemian streets of the Bairro Alto to the cosmopolitan squares of the Baixa. From the narrow alleys of ancient Alfama to the World Heritage Sites of Belém. This incredible tour will provide you with insiders’ look at the very best of Lisbon and show you the main sights while absorbing the city’s vibe!
We start in the center of Chiado, Lisbon’s cultural center, and enter the beautiful Bairro Alto where olives grew five centuries ago, where fado was sung for sailors and artists, where most Lisbon’s newspapers were printed, where nightlife after the dictatorship emerged. We stop at the incredible Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara on the way down, with arguably one of the best views of Lisbon.
We will then continue towards the Carmo Convent and Church and talk about revolutions before stopping at the top of the Elevador de Santa Justa to admire a 360º panorama of the city. Baixa will be our next stop, as we talk about the Great Earthquake of 1755 and the Marques de Pombal’s innovative reconstruction plan.
We’ll follow towards Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest district, stopping first at the Cathedral (Sé) and then on one of Lisbon’s nicest viewpoint, the Miradouro de Santa Luzia. We’ll start going down through the district and, as we reach the Praça do Comércio, where we climb onto the Rua Augusta Arch and appreciate the view of the square below and the Tagus River. We’ll then take a short tram ride to our lunch place: the Mercado da Ribeira, where your expert guide will give you great tips on local food.
After your wonderful lunch we’ll take a short train trip to Belém, the Age of Discoveries district, where caravels departed to explore the new world back in the day. Belém is also home to the original pastel de nata, made here since 1837. And yes! We will try a pastel de Belém, in case you’re wondering, before two of Portugal’s 7 Wonders.
In the Jerónimos Monastery, built in 1502, you will be able to explore the two-story cloister and appreciate highly ornate architecture. Once out of the monastery, and strolling along the Tagus River, we’ll reach the beautiful Tower of Belém, one of Portugal’s most famous monuments. Divided into the bastion and the four-story tower, it is a fine example of the Late Gothic Manueline style.
There is no better way to end our day: next to the tower built to protect Lisbon from incoming raids, but also the last familiar sight for the Portuguese sailors before they left.
