Our Belém Tour of Discoveries is all about the Portuguese maritime expansion, and no better way to start than a 30 minute boat trip on the Tagus River towards the one of Portugal’s most famous monuments: the Tower. A fusion between a medieval tower and a modern bastion, it was initially designed to be a defense tower at the entrance of the Tagus River, but it’s been a dungeon, military barracks, a customs post and even a lighthouse.
Along the Tagus River we visit some other notorious places in Belém, like the Monument to the Discoveries, the nearby Rose of the Winds, and the beautiful and modern Cultural Centre of Belém as we talk about kings and navigators, conquests and legends. Then, the other wonder: the Jerónimo’s Monastery. In 1502, King Manuel I wanted to build the most beautiful monument in the world. Sailor ropes, exotic plants, African fruits intertwined with biblical figures. It’s breathtaking.
We leave the greatest of all the legends of the Belém district for the end: the mouth-watering, magnificent gastronomic monument that goes by the name of Pastel de Belém or de nata, the Belém custard tart. Incredible.
