We begin the Braga Free Tour at Campo das Hortas and, as we go through the Arco da Porta Nova, we talk about the Roman heritage and the influence of the Catholic Church throughout the centuries. Did you know that Braga is still called today the City of the Archbishops? Your guide will take you through Old Braga, as we pass by Braga City Hall and Public Library and feel the weight of history.

We’ll venture into the very heart of the city, the Arcada and Praça da República to admire the breathtaking baroque Convent of the Congregados. If there is one architect that will be referenced along the tour it is André Soares, the self-taught genius that decorated the city with sculptures and towers in the 18th century. Then, descending Avenida da Liberdade we will enjoy the colored flowered sidewalks until the Palácio Raio. And, while listening to secrets and legends, we will head towards the unmissable Sé de Braga, without missing the Church of Santa Cruz and the typical Frigideiras do Cantinho.

The Diocese of Braga dates back to the 3rd Century, but this incredible Cathedral began construction after the city was conquered from the moors in the 11th century. The Cathedral of Braga holds many architectural treasures inside its walls, like a Roman tomb or the Brazil Cross, held at the first mass in the territory. Only facing this fascinating witness to Portugal’s history we are able to understand the expression “older than the Sé de Braga”.
